More Breaking News -- "Brigid Kildare's Steelworks" has been named a finalist in the 79th Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition in the stage play category!

Breaking News -- My short story, "Namesake," has been chosen as an Honorable Mention selection in the internationally respected Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition! It will be posted on the competition website http://shortstorycompetition.com/  soon. Will this mean a new journey into more fiction writing? I'm not sure, but a short story collection may be in the works. Meanwhile, I am still moving my plays through development, workshop and production.

  Scene 1 - Welcome

Experiential Theatrical Plays

When is the last time you attended a play and something was required of you, the audience member, that went beyond remembering to shut off your cell phone? Theatre dramatizes the human experience. It was designed to challenge, to inspire, yes, to amuse and ultimately to change. Does that still happen? Has it all become too easy?

The Feast of Jovi Bono

Jovi is a thirty something single mom and caterer struggling to do something for residents of the tent city next door that would really make a difference. Her ex and her estranged mother are coming to town, her best friend, Malcolm, is wrestling with growing fame and glory, her current catering job threatens to end her career, and the best she and Malcolm can come up with for the tent city dwellers is hosting fabulous dinners and inviting the guests to create from their destruction by telling their stories in slam poetry/spoken word art. The chef/narrator has a unique story to tell and complicates the mix with sometimes illuminating, sometimes just snarky commentary.

Based loosely on the 17th century Italian saint Maria Giovanna Bonomo, who asked the question, "Why is it that we give the worst to the poor?" Early readers of The Feast of Jovi Bono had these comments:

"Uber-interesting characters."
"Gorgeous imagery"
"Intelligent humor"
"Mythic slam poetry"
"A delightful feast."

Jovi is in the reading process now, but will be ready for production by winter, 2011.

Brigid Kildare's Steelworks

Based on St. Brigid of Kildare, an eighth century Irish peasant who worked with metal and liberated Ireland along with her closest ally, St. Patrick. Brigid Kildare in 21st century Ireland Corner is a welder who hangs with a Christian biker gang. In a case ripped from the headlines, leader Patrick is accused of attempted murder after a fight with a rival gang and the court demands he prove he's a Christian. How do we prove beyond a doubt what we believe?  St. Brigid is also the patron saint of television and of children of unmarried parents. With short films interspersed, the play explores how the media shapes our values.  Don't worry -- it's fun, with rapid-fire one-liners, setting fire to things on stage, and the ultimate question -- do they or don't they?
Facebook is a lot of things to a lot of people, but to my plays, it is a crucial part of the experience. Jovi Bono, Brigid Kildare, and Clare Assisi (star of the third play in the trilogy, "Clarity,") each has a Facebook page with albums and descriptions of their friends, foes and family -- the other characters in their plays -- and opportunities for the actors, directors and audience members to "friend" them and share their experiences performing in the plays.

Far more personal than a Fan Page, having human  character profiles on Facebook brings character development to a whole new level for playwright, director, actor and audience member.

If you're on Facebook, friend "Jovi Bono," "Brigid Kildare" and "Clare Assisi" today!

I will be participating in the 2010 National Playwriting Month, creating a new, full length play during the 30 days of November.
